3 Steps to Choosing the Perfect Lamp

3 Steps to Choosing the Perfect Lamp

1. Determine Your NeedsCoffee Table 00609

The first step to discovering your perfect lamp is to determine what exactly your room’s lighting needs are. Your room could be a vast, empty space in desperate need of warmth. You could have an office with tall ceilings and a desk covered in shadows. You might have a living room that currently has a short, stout floor lamp that simply doesn’t match your decorating theme. Regardless, it will be difficult to move forward if you still don’t know what kind of lighting you need.

Think about the space of your room, the height of your ceilings, and what you are going to use the light for. If you are going to use this lamp as the main source of light in your room, then a larger floor lamp might be your best bet, especially because those can normally support higher wattage bulbs. If you have a small space just needing a little bit of brightening, a more decorative than functional piece can be used.

2. Consider Placement and Variety

When choosing your lamp, think about where it will be placed. For example, make sure that there is an outlet nearby. Also consider the space of the pieces you will be placing the lamp by. A large, towering floor lamp would dominate a small reading chair, just as a tiny table lamp could look odd on a massive office desk. When it comes to variety, feel free to be bold! As shown in the room below, they use the geometric style hanging light to accent the modern furniture, but they also use a cozy floor lamp and chandelier in a balanced fashion.

3. Match Your StyleWaterfront Grace

Once you are able to determine the function that your lamp will provide, it is easier to narrow down your search. Whether you pick a floor lamp, table lamp, accent lights, or a hanging chandelier, it will look best if it can match the design/theme of your room. For example, a tiffany-style lamp will look best in an antique, traditional room, rather than a very modern space.  The lamp doesn’t necessarily need to perfectly match colors or shape wise. Don’t be afraid to let your lamp be a unique focal point in your room! That is one of the reasons we love Tiffany-style lamps;  they draw the eye! Just make sure that your lamp fits the generally vibe that your room is communicating. The lamp below is unique and different from the other pieces of furniture in this room, but is consistent with the feel of the room.
